Michigan House Passes February Presidential Primary Bill

After passing the state Senate late last week, SB 13 was quickly taken up and passed by the Michigan state House on Tuesday.

The legislation to shift the presidential primary in the Great Lakes state to the fourth Tuesday in February was initially discharged from committee and taken up on the floor where it was subsequently passed on a 56-53 party line vote with majority Democrats in support.

SB 13 will now be transmitted to Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) for her consideration. The measure is intended to bring the Michigan presidential primary in line with the primary proposal put forth by President Biden in December and adopted soon thereafter by the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee (DNCRBC). Whitmer's signature a given considering the assurances the governor and Democratic legislative leaders in Michigan made to the DNCRBC (via letter) earlier this month to meet the panel's February 1 deadline to act on the presidential primary move.
